Kurniawan, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives said on Tuesday it would conduct a<br>\nseries of interviews with 44 Supreme Court justice candidates<br>\nnext week.<\/p>\n<p>All 44 of them, who were nominated by the Supreme Court, have<br>\nhad long careers as lower court judges. They will be vying for 12<br>\nspots as Supreme Court justices and two for the constitutional<br>\ncourt.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy chairman of House Commission II for domestic and legal<br>\naffairs AR Gaffar said the commission members had all been banned<br>\nfrom making contact with the candidates prior to the screening<br>\nprocess, scheduled to take place between June 14 and June 18.<\/p>\n<p>Gaffar said the commission wants to improve upon last year's<br>\nrecruitment, which may have been tainted. At least one candidate<br>\ncame forward and said he had been asked for money by a person<br>\nclaiming to represent commission chairman Agustin Teras Narang.<br>\nThe commission, however, dismissed the allegation at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\"There will be no bribes involved in the selection,\" Gaffar<br>\nwas quoted as saying on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Teras said the lawmakers expected feedback from citizens, who<br>\nwould be allowed to provide input on the candidates' credibility<br>\nand integrity via written statements. The commission will give<br>\nthe general public from Tuesday until Saturday to hand in the<br>\nstatements about the candidates.<\/p>\n<p>\"The feedback from people is part of our efforts to ensure<br>\ntransparency and public accountability in the selection of new<br>\njustices,\" Teras said.<\/p>\n<p>For the sake of transparency also, he added, the House would<br>\nnot take into account any input sent anonymously.<\/p>\n<p>Statements can be sent to the House Commission II secretariat<br>\nat Nusantara Building II on Jl. Gatot Subroto, Central Jakarta,<br>\nor by fax to 021-5714-522 or 5715-524.<\/p>\n<p>The complete list of the candidates is available at<br>\nwww.thejakartapost.com or www.dpr-ri-komisi-2.or.id.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving the statements, the commission will conduct<br>\ninterviews on June 14 for six candidates, 10 candidates on<br>\nTuesday, 10 on Thursday and the rest on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The commission will vote to determine the eligible candidates<br>\non Friday evening, with the House's endorsement to be given in a<br>\nplenary session scheduled for June 21.
