House announces 44 justice candidates<\/p>\n

The House of Representatives said on Tuesday it would conduct a
\nseries of interviews with 44 Supreme Court justice candidates
\nnext week.<\/p>\n
All 44 of them, who were nominated by the Supreme Court, have
\nhad long careers as lower court judges. They will be vying for 12
\nspots as Supreme Court justices and two for the constitutional
\ncourt.<\/p>\n
Deputy chairman of House Commission II for domestic and legal
\naffairs AR Gaffar said the commission members had all been banned
\nfrom making contact with the candidates prior to the screening
\nprocess, scheduled to take place between June 14 and June 18.<\/p>\n
Gaffar said the commission wants to improve upon last year's
\nrecruitment, which may have been tainted. At least one candidate
\ncame forward and said he had been asked for money by a person
\nclaiming to represent commission chairman Agustin Teras Narang.
\nThe commission, however, dismissed the allegation at the time.<\/p>\n
\"There will be no bribes involved in the selection,\" Gaffar
\nwas quoted as saying on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Teras said the lawmakers expected feedback from citizens, who
\nwould be allowed to provide input on the candidates' credibility
\nand integrity via written statements. The commission will give
\nthe general public from Tuesday until Saturday to hand in the
\nstatements about the candidates.<\/p>\n
\"The feedback from people is part of our efforts to ensure
\ntransparency and public accountability in the selection of new
\njustices,\" Teras said.<\/p>\n
For the sake of transparency also, he added, the House would
\nnot take into account any input sent anonymously.<\/p>\n
Statements can be sent to the House Commission II secretariat
\nat Nusantara Building II on Jl. Gatot Subroto, Central Jakarta,
\nor by fax to 021-5714-522 or 5715-524.<\/p>\n

After receiving the statements, the commission will conduct
\ninterviews on June 14 for six candidates, 10 candidates on
\nTuesday, 10 on Thursday and the rest on Friday.<\/p>\n
The commission will vote to determine the eligible candidates
\non Friday evening, with the House's endorsement to be given in a
\nplenary session scheduled for June 21. Later that same day the
\nPresident is expected to approve the candidates.<\/p>\n
