        "content": "<p>Lawyer Hotman Paris says he received a late-night call from President\nPrabowo Subianto on Tuesday (May 19) asking for his views on the\nChromebook corruption case involving former Education and Culture and\nResearch and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Tepat jam 8 malam pada saat saya sudah mau tidur, tiba-tiba telepon\nsaya berdering dari ajudan Presiden dan saya disambungkan dengan Bapak\nPresiden Prabowo,\u2019 Hotman said in a video posted on his Instagram\naccount.<\/p>\n<p>In the conversation, Hotman said Prabowo genuinely wants the\nChromebook procurement corruption case to be judged fairly. As such, he\nsaid, the president asked him about the case.<\/p>\n<p>Hotman, who had previously acted as Nadiem\u2019s lawyer, said he had\nconveyed his views to the President. Including, he said, his assessment\nof the evidence and the material.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018However, on social media I cannot reveal what I told the President.\nThat is my secret,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hotman only offered clues or hints. One of them, he claimed, was that\nhe told the president that Nadiem\u2019s subordinate, Ibrahim Arief alias\nIbam, had already been convicted with a four-year prison term in that\ncase.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, Hotman believes the Judges Panel will issue a verdict in\nline with the Ibam case with Nadiem as Ibam\u2019s boss.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So I said, the most likely scenario is that the judges will be\nconsistent with their decision as against Ibam,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Because if an assistant has already been convicted, then the\nassistant was convicted for helping whom? Helping his boss? You know the\nanswer,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Attorney General\u2019s Office (JPU) of the Supreme Court\ndemanded the Jakarta Corruption Court panel convict Nadiem Anwar Makarim\nof 18 years\u2019 imprisonment and a Rp1 billion fine, subsiding 190 days in\nprison.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors also demanded Nadiem pay restitution totalling\nRp809,597,125,000 (Rp809.5 billion) and Rp4,871,469,603,758 (Rp4.8\ntrillion) \u2014 assets alleged to be disproportionate to the defendant\u2019s\nlawful income or suspected to derive from corruption.<\/p>\n<p>If the restitution is not paid, it will be substituted with a\nnine-year prison term.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors stated that former Minister of Education and Culture\nunder President Joko Widodo had been shown to have harmed state finances\nin the Chromebook and CDM procurements for the 2020-2022 budget\nyear.<\/p>\n<p>(tfq\/wis)<\/p>",
