Hotline for sexual abuse victims opened<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has opened a hotline for victims
\nwho were sexually assaulted during last month's riots.<\/p>\n
A major aim of the hotline is to collect reports from victims
\nwho may be too disheartened to directly inform security officers
\nof such violations.<\/p>\n
Those wishing to make a report can call (021) 3805539 or
\n3805559.<\/p>\n
State Minister of Women's Affairs Tutty Alawiyah said her
\noffice opened the hotline to collect reports of sexual abuse from
\nlast month's riots.<\/p>\n
\"The hotline is called Pos Katabunga which stands for buka
\nmata buka telinga (open your eyes and ears),\" she said here
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
\"We are very concerned and we condemn the inhumanity of these
\npeople. We are trying to probe reports of sexual abuse of women,
\nnot only in Jakarta but also nationwide. We have also set up an
\ninvestigation team,\" she explained.<\/p>\n
The team is headed by the ministry's assistant for socio-
\ncultural development, Sri Hardjoso, and a ministry sociology
\nexpert, Wiek Wibadswo.<\/p>\n
Tutty expressed disappointment that activists investigating
\nthe riots have yet to provide her with concrete information on
\nthose reportedly abused.<\/p>\n
It is not surprising that we are finding it difficult to
\nlaunch an investigation, she said.<\/p>\n
\"We have even received phone calls from disgruntled people,
\nsome of whom have used abusive language and accused us of being
\nignorant,\" she lamented.<\/p>\n
Sri Hardjoso said the ministry still had no accurate data on
\nthe number of victims, but predicted it could number between 50
