Hotels enjoy high occupancy rate over long weekend<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Several hotels in the capital benefited from the
\nlong weekend, with the Buddhist holiday Waisak on Monday, as
\nshown by an increase in their occupancy rates of up to 30
\npercent.<\/p>\n
Horison Hotel in North Jakarta, which is located near Ancol
\nbeach and Ancol Fantasy Land Amusement Park, had an 89 percent
\noccupancy rate during the weekend.<\/p>\n
"Usually on weekends, the occupancy rate is 75 percent. But it
\nincreased from Saturday to Monday," the hotel's reservation
\nofficer Sandra Oktavia told The Jakarta Post over the phone on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Horison is a four-star hotel with a capacity of 440 rooms.<\/p>\n
Most of the guests, Sandra said, were families who came from
\nJakarta or other cities.<\/p>\n
"There are also many foreigners, but they were mostly long-
\nstaying guests," she added.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, four-star Mercure Hotel on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, Central
\nJakarta, also saw a 20 percent increase, up from its usual
\noccupancy rate of 60 percent on the weekend.<\/p>\n
"On weekdays, we only have around 20 percent occupancy rate,"
\nduty manager Reza Kurniawan told the Post.<\/p>\n
"Besides guests who were enjoying their long weekend, there
\nwere also a group of athletes from the Indonesian Tennis
\nAssociation (Pelti)," he added without elaborating.<\/p>\n
Pelti will start its World Youth Cup on Saturday.<\/p>\n
According to Reza most of the guests were Jakarta residents.<\/p>\n
Enjoying a similar increase to Horison and Mercure, Ibis
\nKemayoran in Central Jakarta had almost 90 percent occupancy
\nduring the weekend.<\/p>\n
"Most guests checked in on Friday night and left on Monday,"
\nsaid Yudi, a reservation officer at the three-star hotel.<\/p>\n
However, the increase apparently did not occur at five-star
\nhotels.<\/p>\n
Hotel Mulia in Senayan, South Jakarta, for example did not see
\nany significant increase in the number of the guests staying over
\nthe weekend.<\/p>\n
"There was an increase, but very nominal. You see, our hotel
\nis a business hotel, so it's usually booked for business people,"
\nsaid Rini, a receptionist.<\/p>\n
A similar situation was noted at Hilton Hotel and Shangri-La
\nHotel in Central Jakarta as there was no significant increase in
\nthe number of guests.<\/p>\n
The capital itself on Monday was unusually quiet until
\nafternoon; the major thoroughfares looked a lot less crowded than
\nusual.<\/p>\n
Along Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta to Jl. M.H. Thamrin in
\nCentral Jakarta, where traffic jams are a daily occurrence, there
\nwere only several cars seen passing by.<\/p>\n
Similar conditions could also be seen around Kramat and the
\nNational Monument in Central Jakarta, and also around Blok M and
\nKebayoran Baru in South Jakarta. Shopping arcade Plaza Senayan
\nwas also less crowded than usual.<\/p>\n
Areas in which Chinese-Indonesians live and run their
\nbusinesses, such as in Kota, Central Jakarta, and Mangga Dua in
\nNorth Jakarta, were also quiet as many shops were closed because
\nthe owners were celebrating the Buddhist holiday of Waisak.<\/p>\n
Crowds were seen only in amusement parks like the Ancol
\nFantasy Land and Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta.(hdn)<\/p>",
