Hoteliers pledge to improve service<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association
\n(IHRA) will consolidate its members in cooperation with local
\nadministrations to improve services to tourists.<\/p>\n
The association's chairman, Ponco Sutowo, told reporters after
\nthe closing of its two-day annual conference here yesterday that
\nboth hoteliers and restaurant owners should cooperate in creating
\nbetter services in hospitality arrangements.<\/p>\n
\"We think local administrations cannot do anything without
\nbusinessmen, while businessmen should not insist that local
\nadministrations allow them to do whatever they want,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He also said that IHRA will slightly reform its supervision
\nsystem, also with an aim of service improvement.<\/p>\n
\"We will soon establish a supervision system based on the
\nregionalization of tourism destinations set by the government.
\nSuch a system will hopefully be useful for control and guidance,\"
\nPonco said.<\/p>\n
He said that such a system will also be good for the progress
\nof the hotel and restaurant industries.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel
\nAgencies (Asita), which also closed its annual conference
\nyesterday, confirmed its previous agreement on the limitation of
\nairfare discounting, which is, according to it, the best solution
\nto end fierce competition.<\/p>\n
The agreement among tour and travel agencies, effective on
\nMarch 1, limits competition among them by outlawing the practice
\nof using their commissions to discount tickets above the
\ndiscounts given by airlines. The agreement, called \"Plan Save 5,\"
\nalso allows discounts of no greater than seven percent on tickets
\nfor international flights. In the past, discounts reached up to
\n40 percent.<\/p>\n
Asita will also help improve the operation of its four
\nchapters, comprising those from North Sumatra, Riau, North
