        "content": "<p>Hotel workers to get jobs back<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The Jakarta State Administrative Court has ordered<br>\nthe Shangri-La Hotel to re-employ 79 workers laid off 16 months<br>\nago.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding Judge Marcus Lande and a panel of justices ruled the<br>\nsackings were unlawful, overruling an earlier decision in the<br>\nhotel's favor by the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration's<br>\nlabor dispute committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Shangri-La's management fired 579 employees in November<br>\n2000 after they stopped work and conducted protest rallies,<br>\ndemanding better pay and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the South Jakarta District Court convicted several<br>\nformer employees of the hotel for causing financial losses to the<br>\nShangri-La, which was forced to temporarily close during the<br>\nstrike. The court also ordered them to pay US$2 million in<br>\ncompensation for the losses.<\/p>\n<p>The former employees then reported the case to the<br>\nInternational Labor Organization, which urged the government to<br>\nsettle the problem. -- JP<\/p>",
