Hotel footage shows thief grabbing money<\/p>\n

The police arrested one member of a gang who stole US$300,000
\nfrom representatives of the Rabithah Alam Islami (World Islamic
\nLeague) during their stay at the Borobudur Hotel, Central
\nJakarta, last week.<\/p>\n
City police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said on Thursday that
\nthey had detained the person captured on film taking the bag of
\nmoney by the hotel's CCTV system.<\/p>\n
The suspect, identified as DN, 32, was arrested late on
\nWednesday in Bogor with $30,000 and Rp 32 million in his
\npossession, said the police's chief of general crimes, Sr. Comr.
\nMoh. Jaelani.<\/p>\n
\"The suspect confessed that he belonged to a seven-member
\nPalembang gang specializing in theft at hotels in Jakarta,\" he
\ntold The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The suspect also said the money, which was intended for
\ntsunami victims in Aceh, had been distributed among the gang
\nmembers.<\/p>\n
Jaelani expressed optimism that the rest of the gang would be
\narrested soon as DN had disclosed several locations where they
\nstayed.<\/p>\n
The Rabithah Alam Islami -- comprising religious leaders from
\nthe Middle East and Africa -- were checking into the hotel last
\nThursday when two of them, identified as Abdul Satar and Ali
\nSulaeman, went to the hotel's money changer to exchange money.<\/p>\n
While exchanging money at the counter, one of them put his bag
\ndown on the floor. The bag was found to be missing soon after.
\nThe representatives reported the incident to the management of
\nthe hotel, who then called the police.<\/p>\n
However, none of the representatives, who only speak Arabic,
\nwanted to talk to the police, not even when officers visited
\ntheir rooms on several occasions. They left Indonesia on Tuesday
\nafter only reporting the incident to Saudi Arabian Embassy and
\nthe Ministry of Religious Affairs.<\/p>\n
After complaining that they were having difficulties solving
\nthe case, the police proceeded with the investigation, relying
\nsolely on the CCTV recording and witnesses.<\/p>\n
The delegation, led by the organization's secretary-general,
\nAbdullah bin Abdul Muhsin At Turki, was here to give lectures on
\nwhat it termed true Islamic teachings. Besides meeting with
\nPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the group also gave a lecture
\nat the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah in
\nJakarta, met with religious leaders and visited Aceh.<\/p>",
