Hotel development projections off target<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hotels are being established at a rate far
\nslower than that outlined in the government's Sixth Five Year
\nDevelopment Plan (Repelita VI).<\/p>\n
The Directorate General of Tourism's recently issued Hotel
\nDirectory shows that only 836 new hotels with 19,414 rooms were
\nadded during the January 1994 to June 1996 period.<\/p>\n
Under Repelita VI, the government set a target of 100,000 new
\nhotel rooms between April 1994 and March 1999.<\/p>\n
The total number of hotel rooms in the country as of June this
\nyear stood at 194,551 in 8,674 hotels. Of the hotels, 710 are
\nstar-rated with 67,562 rooms and 7,964 are non-star-rated with
\n129,989 rooms.<\/p>\n
Of the star-rated hotels, 47.5 percent are located in Java,
\n12.7 percent in Bali, 21.7 percent in Sumatra, 4 percent in
\nKalimantan and 14 percent on other major islands.<\/p>\n
According to the directory, 29 star-rated hotels with 6,644
\nrooms are scheduled to open this year and 18 hotels with 5,924
\nrooms in 1997.<\/p>\n
Five provinces were stated to have an inadequate number of
\nhotels. As of June, Bengkulu in southern Sumatra had only one
\ntwo-star and two one-star hotels with 86 rooms, Central
\nKalimantan one two-star hotel with 27 rooms, Central Sulawesi one
\ntwo-star and one one-star hotel with 82 rooms, Southeast Sulawesi
\ntwo one-star hotels with 54 rooms and East Timor three one-star
\nhotels with 126 rooms. None are managed by international chains.<\/p>\n
Bali, the country's best known tourist destination, has 90
\nstar-rated hotels: 19 five-star, nine four-star, 28 three-star,
\n27 two-star and seven one-star hotels -- most of which are
\nmanaged by international chains such as Sheraton, Inter-
\nContinental, Hilton, Radisson, Holiday Inn, Hyatt, Nikko, Club
\nMed, Aman, Imperial, and Melia-Sol.<\/p>\n
The directory said that Bali, Jakarta and North Sumatra remain
\nthe most popular destinations for foreign visitors, with shares
\nof 32 percent, 25 percent and 11 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n
Indonesia recorded 2,366,341 foreign tourists visiting from
\nJanuary to July, a 20.7 percent increase over the first seven
\nmonths of 1995.<\/p>\n
Last year, 4.32 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia,
\nspending some US$5.2 billion. The country expects to earn more
\nthan $6.57 billion in revenues from about five million overseas
\nvisitors this year.<\/p>\n
The proportion of foreign tourists staying at star-rated
\nhotels during their Indonesian visits increased steadily from
\n81.19 percent in 1991 to 81.95 percent in 1992, to 82.19 percent
\nin 1993 and to 88.15 percent in 1994. (icn)<\/p>",
