Hospitals deny lacking waste treatment units<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Three hospitals denied yesterday reports that
\nthey did not have waste treatment facilities.<\/p>\n
The private Ongko Mulyo hospital in Pulomas, North Jakarta
\nsaid the hospital had the necessary equipment.<\/p>\n
The hospital's maintenance chief, Bambang Estu, questioned the
\nvalidity of city authorities' waste samples.<\/p>\n
He said that last year waste samples were taken from a flooded
\npart of the hospital's disposal system.<\/p>\n
A representative of the public Fatmawati hospital, South
\nJakarta, said it had separate waste treatment units for each of
\nits divisions but was building a centralized system.<\/p>\n
The hospitals were responding to reports they were among 10
\nhospitals the city had punished for dumping untreated waste into
\nrivers.<\/p>\n
City Environmental Bureau head J.B. Damanik had said only 23
\nof Jakarta's 98 hospital had standard waste treatment units.<\/p>\n
He had that last February the city sealed four hospitals'
\ndisposal pipes and gave written warnings to six others but none
\nhad reported on their progress in building waste treatment
\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
The four hospitals to have their pipes sealed were Ongko
\nMulyo, Fatmawati, Persahabatan and Halim Perdanakusuma. The
\nlatter two are in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Gatot Subroto hospital got a written warning. The hospital's
\nmaintenance chief Sunarto said the hospital had six waste
\ntreatment units.<\/p>\n
\"Our treated waste is always controlled by the agency in
\ncharge of the waste and the sample always meets tolerable
\nlimits,\" Sunarto said.<\/p>\n
But the private Pasar Minggu hospital in South Jakarta said it
\ndid not have waste treatment facilities.<\/p>\n
\"The apparatus is too expensive, a small hospital like us
\ncan't afford it,\" a spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n
She said the city's health agency's mayoralty office handled
\nliquid waste.<\/p>\n
In 1992 the Ministry of Health issued a decree requiring all
\nhospitals to have waste management units. The decree gave
\nhospitals three years to build the units.<\/p>\n
In 1995 the governor issued a decree requiring all industries
\nand hospitals to treat waste before dumping it into rivers.<\/p>\n
The Pasar Minggu hospital executive said because the hospital
\nwas among the city's smallest with only 52 beds, the municipality
\nshould handle its waste.<\/p>\n
\"We would be prepared to pay fees (for the service),\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Bambang said Ongko Mulyo hospital also hired a firm to manage
\nits waste.<\/p>\n
\"The contract with the firm stipulates that if the waste gets
\nout of control we don't pay them,\" Bambang said.<\/p>\n
He denied the hospital's pipes were ever sealed.
\n\"If they had been sealed, the hospital would have been flooded\".
