Horrified at Indonesia's face<\/p>\n

We are horrified to see the face of Indonesia today. On one
\nside you have the silent majority -- they earn a decent living,
\nexercise tolerance, speak politely and uphold morality. On the
\nother side, you have the concentrated minority with a penchant
\nfor mass mobilization (small in number but armed), protest
\nrallies to condemn certain people, character assassination and
\nultra-sectarianism.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is about 10 times bigger than Malaysia. Malaysia has
\novercome its crisis so we should use it as a model to get out of
\nour own crisis.<\/p>\n
Then observe the silent majority. They are not familiar with
\nsuch terms as democracy, reform, the New Order or human rights.
\nThey can only earn a living to support their families and send
\ntheir children to school. Sometimes they hope that the prices of
\ndaily commodities will not further increase and at other times
\nthey wish they could return to the Soeharto era, which was
\nrelatively better than the present situation. Let's now seek
\nVolume Two of the Soeharto era. We need a leader like Soeharto
\nbut must do away with the corruption, collusion, nepotism and
\nmilitarism of his days. A mite of \"white\" authoritarianism is
\nnecessary for Indonesia today. Or, perhaps, we must \"import\"
\nMahathir Mohammad to this country. Dr. Sjahrir is right: \"It's an
\neconomic emergency.\"<\/p>\n
