Hopes pinned on Mega-Hamzah duo<\/p>\n

For close to four years now. Indonesians have been baffled by
\npolitical uncertainty, and social and security disturbances with
\nthe result that national economic recovery efforts have been
\nseriously hampered.<\/p>\n
The exchange rate of the rupiah against the United States
\ndollar has never been stable all this time while the rate of
\ninflation has continued to increase. As a result, a number of the
\ngovernment's economic restructuring programs have been
\nobstructed.<\/p>\n
This situation has been exacerbated by the fact that the
\nInternational Monetary Fund (IMF), an agency overseeing
\nIndonesia's economic recovery efforts, has since December 2000
\npostponed the disbursement of another tranche of its loan to
\nIndonesia, a decision leading to unfavorable perceptions that the
\nadministration of former president Abdurrahman Wahid was
\nincapable of forging cooperation with the international community
\nin the financial and monetary sectors.<\/p>\n
Regardless of the correctness of this perception, I would like
\nto express my sincere hope that Megawati and Hamzah Haz can run
\nan effective administration and establish strong political
\nleadership capable of applying effective economic policies that
\nconform with the nation's agenda in the future.<\/p>\n
May Megawati and Hamzah Haz be imbued with forward-looking
\nvision so that they will not just comply with the wishes of a
\nhandful of people in bowing to the dictates of international
\ncreditors, whose interests may not always be in line with our
\nnational interests.<\/p>\n
It is also hoped that Mega's cabinet will be able to translate
\nthe nation's interests into concrete economic policies so that
\nIndonesia will not always have to let itself be dictated to by
\nglobal capitalism as manifested by, among other things, the loans
\nextended to this country.<\/p>\n
