At 12.40 on April 2, 1995, I was driving my car along Jl.
\nJend. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin towards Jl. Merdeka Barat on my
\nway to lunch with a friend. When passing the fountain circle, I
\nfelt the left tire was flat. I then slowly drove the car on to
\nJl. Merdeka Barat and parked it on the side of the road, a few
\nyards before the main gate of the Defense and Security building.<\/p>\n
No sooner had I parked the car, two people approached us and
\noffered to change the tire. I did not object to the offer. After
\nthey had finished, I handed over a Rp 5000 bank note to one of
\nthe men, which he accepted. But his well-dressed and mustached
\ncompanion, who smelt of alcohol, asked for more and then snatched
\nmy wallet and my wrist watch. I gave him another 100 Singaporean
\ndollars. At the same time I wanted him to give my wallet and my
\nwatch back. But the man refused to give me them. Instead he drew
\nout a long knife and attacked my friend. My friend tried to
\ndefend himself and his finger was severely injured. It was
\nbleeding profusely. The two men fled in the direction of the
\nNational Monument.<\/p>\n
We went to the nearest public hospital to treat my friend's
\nwound. But we had not enough time to report the incident to the
\npolice because my friend had to leave town immediately. We
\nsuggest the police rid the place of the lurking criminals.<\/p>\n
