Hookers flock Semper neighborhood<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Residents of Semper Timur subdistrict in North
\nJakarta demanded on Monday that City Council Commission E for
\nsocial welfare take action against the rampant prostitution in
\nthe neighboring subdistrict of Kampung Rawa Malang.<\/p>\n
Rochidi, the spokesman for the delegation of 12
\nrepresentatives of the subdistrict, told commission members that
\nprostitution at Kampung Rawa Malang subdistrict, which is only a
\nkilometer away from their homes, had reached an alarming level as
\nit increased the number of prostitutes and also drug and alcohol
\nuse.<\/p>\n
\"We've come here to deliver the residents' aspiration through
\na dialog as many can no longer tolerate the prostitution and have
\npledged to combat these activities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
A delegation member, Sanusi, said despite unceasing protests
\nby local residents, officers from Cilincing district and Semper
\nTimur subdistrict were unable to restore order to Kampung Rawa
\nMalang.<\/p>\n
He said there were at least 60 pimps operating in the area,
\nwith some 500 prostitutes occupying at least 100 houses.<\/p>\n
The Kramat Tunggak red-light district, which is only 1.2
\nkilometers away from Kampung Rawa Malang, was closed by Governor
\nSutiyoso last December.<\/p>\n
In response to their demand, the commission chairman Edy
\nSuchro Abdul Djalal vowed to summon local officials for
\nquestioning and to visit the area soon. (06)<\/p>",
