Hoodlums clash twice with Tanah Abang residents<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Clashes between residents and hoodlums in Tanah
\nAbang, Central Jakarta, erupted again yesterday in the morning
\nand evening, leaving two people badly injured.<\/p>\n
The first clash took place about 3 a.m. when members of a
\nhoodlum gang were incensed after a kiosk owner turned down their
\nrequest for liquor, a resident of Tanah Abang said.<\/p>\n
\"Actually we are very tired of their activities. It's really
\ndisruptive for our neighborhood,\" Yuli, a representative of Tanah
\nAbang's Family Group, said.<\/p>\n
Yuli said she heard about the clash when she was preparing for
\nthe dawn prayer.<\/p>\n
\"The owner of the kiosk called for help as soon as the
\nhoodlums attacked his kiosk. Fortunately the police officers came
\nquickly and helped settle the clash.\"<\/p>\n
One of the hoodlums, who was drunk, was rushed to Cipto
\nMangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta after he was
\nbadly beaten, reportedly by his own friend.<\/p>\n
The second clash erupted about 5.30 p.m. when a group of
\nIrianese boys attacked youngsters from Kebon Melati who were
\nplaying soccer in an open field near Jl. K.H. Mas Mansyur.<\/p>\n
The clash began when the Irianese boys reportedly pushed one
\nof the youngsters and took the ball away.<\/p>\n
\"The youngsters then called out to their friends to back them
\nup and the clash began,\" Romiah, one of the residents, said.<\/p>\n
The clash ended about 7 p.m. when Tanah Abang Police were
\ndeployed to the area.<\/p>\n
One of the Irianese boys was reportedly injured and taken to a
\nnearby hospital.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said
\nyesterday that the hoodlum problem in Tanah Abang had become a
\nclassic problem.<\/p>\n
\"Tensions (between the residents and the hoodlums) are running
\nhigh in this area. It has been going on for years now. I admit
\nthat the situation is complex and it is not easy to solve this
\nkind of problem,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Tanah Abang is the hottest address in the city with clashes,
\ndisputes and riots dominating news about the area.<\/p>\n
Police records indicate there have been 11 crackdowns in the
\nTanah Abang area this year.<\/p>\n
In a large-scale crackdown last October, 67 alleged hoodlums
\nfrom Tanah Abang were rounded up and forced to participate in a
\nrehabilitation program in Ragunan Sports Dormitory in South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Last year, there were 74 crackdown operations to eradicate
\nhoodlums, gamblers, prostitutes and illegal buildings in Tanah
\nAbang.<\/p>\n
At least four people were killed and 23 others were injured in
