The authorities have been trying to curb hoodlum activity
\naround the country, a move much hailed by society at large. Many
\npeople want the complete removal of this \"predator\" species from
\nIndonesian soil.<\/p>\n
However, if we look into the matter more deeply, their
\nexistence is not extraordinary. All men are basically clean at
\nbirth. When some of them grow up to become sadistic and cruel
\nhoodlums that resort to violence and brutality, we must regard it
\nas a social disease. And believe me, even among hoodlums we can
\nstill find atoms of love and purity in them.<\/p>\n
Then why do hoodlums exist? One of the major causes is
\npoverty. It is undeniable that poverty breeds criminality.
\nResearch reveals that poverty is the cause of criminality. Only a
\nfew cases of criminality are triggered by vengeance. As the Greek
\nphilosopher Aristotle said: \"Poverty may lead to criminality and
\nrebellion.\" Another philosopher said: \"Man's gold is the source
\nof many crimes.\"<\/p>\n
The wider the social gap, the lower the people's morale
\nbecomes. There is an absolute truth in the opinions of the these
\ntwo philosophers. Thieves, pick-pockets and other criminals are
\nabundant where a social gap exists.<\/p>\n
If we really want to abolish crime and hoodlums, we must first
\nand foremost eradicate poverty and narrow the social gap.
\nWe must consider social equity. Also we should live a modest life
\nand create a sense of social solidarity regardless of ethnic
\norigin, religious beliefs, etc.<\/p>\n
