DPR member Bambang Soesatyo has expressed deep condolences over the\ndeath of Indonesia\u2019s sixth Vice-President, retired General Try Sutrisno.\nFor Bamsoet, the late figure was a true military leader who consistently\nreflected on the nation\u2019s future, particularly regarding Pancasila, the\nintegrity of the Indonesian state, and the country\u2019s constitutional\ndirection.<\/p>\n
Amid political circumstances that are often tumultuous and filled\nwith short-term interests, Bamsoet explained, Try Sutrisno was known as\na figure who remained calm, thought strategically ahead, and dared to\nspeak out.<\/p>\n
\u201cPak Try was a true soldier. His manner of speaking was calm, but his\nmessage was profound. At such an advanced age, he continued to follow\nthe nation\u2019s development and kept reminding us about the state\u2019s\nfoundations and constitution,\u201d said Bamsoet in his statement on Monday,\n2 March 2026.<\/p>\n
Bamsoet noted that as Commander of the Armed Forces from 1988 to\n1993, Try Sutrisno directly experienced important periods in Indonesian\nhistory. He was within the circles of power leading up to the 1998\nReformation, and witnessed major changes when the 1945 Constitution was\namended four times between 1999 and 2002.<\/p>\n
These changes, according to Bamsoet, shifted many fundamental aspects\nof the state system, from the MPR\u2019s position no longer being the highest\nstate institution to the strengthening of the presidential system\nthrough direct presidential elections by the people. Since then, the\nrelationship between government and the DPR became more balanced, and\nthe multiparty system developed very dynamically.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe often said that democracy is important and must be protected. But\nwe must also dare to evaluate. We must not let the system we build move\naway from our nation\u2019s own character,\u201d said Bamsoet.<\/p>\n
This Deputy Chairman General of the Golkar Party explained that\nduring national meetings with MPR leadership in 2019-2024, Try Sutrisno\nfrequently stated that constitutional amendments were a historical\nproduct born from the spirit of Reformation. However, every historical\nproduct remains open for review if there are aspects that seem\nmisaligned with contemporary needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe often said that change is natural in democracy. But we must not\nlose direction. Indonesia\u2019s presidential system has its own distinctive\ncharacteristics. We should not blindly imitate Western systems without\nconsidering our nation\u2019s character. That is why he proposed restoring\nthe 1945 Constitution to its original format,\u201d explained Bamsoet.<\/p>\n
Bamsoet added that Try Sutrisno\u2019s desire to review the results of the\nfourth amendment to the 1945 Constitution does not mean he wanted to\nreturn to the past. Rather, Try Sutrisno wanted to ensure that changes\nthat had occurred truly strengthened the state.<\/p>\n
In various meetings, Try Sutrisno also reminded the nation to\nmaintain Pancasila as its primary foundation. He was concerned that if\nthe political system became too pragmatic and overly liberal without\nstrong ideological control, the nation\u2019s identity could gradually\nerode.<\/p>\n
\u201cPak Try always emphasised three things: Pancasila, the integrity of\nthe Indonesian state, and Indonesia\u2019s distinctive presidential system.\nAccording to him, these three things are one package.
