        "content": "<p>HongkongBank has yet to heed deadline<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Despite the deadline yesterday, the management<br>\nof HongkongBank has yet to reemploy its 166 workers as stipulated<br>\nby a decision of the arbitration body of the Ministry of<br>\nManpower.<\/p>\n<p>The bank's public relations manager, Leila Djafaar, said the<br>\nmanagement was still considering any possibilities and aspects,<br>\nincluding the rights, humanity and feelings of the majority of<br>\nthe workers who were not involved in and were against the strike<br>\nwhich, she claimed, was illegal.<\/p>\n<p>\"If the bank's union has a right to appeal, we have the same<br>\nright,\" Leila told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>She did not further discuss whether the management will<br>\nappeal.<\/p>\n<p>The arbitration body decided on July 22 that the management<br>\nhad to recall its employees through written notices and pay their<br>\nsalaries from May, when the bank terminated their employment.<\/p>\n<p>The body gave 14 days to the management to honor the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>The case was taken to the arbitration body late in May,<br>\nfollowing a strike by the bank's employees.<\/p>\n<p>The strike, unionists said, was caused by the management's<br>\nstalling of negotiations on a new collective labor agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Leila called the workers' demands irrational because the<br>\ncity's arbitration body refused the demands on July 17.<\/p>\n<p>The workers then appealed the case to the arbitration body of<br>\nthe Ministry of Manpower.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the bank's union, Ugianto, said the arbitration<br>\nbody's decision obligates the bank to recall the workers back.<\/p>\n<p>\"We want to go back to work. It is the most important thing<br>\nfor us now,\" he told The Post yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the management will still refuse the decision in the<br>\nname of the majority of the workers.<\/p>\n<p>\"But some of the workers are temporary workers who replaced<br>\nus,\" he added.
