The media often say that one minute of television broadcast
\ncosts several thousand U.S. dollars, emphasizing that television
\nreports must therefore be useful and efficient. What you actually
\nsee on television tells a different story.<\/p>\n
Every year, two weeks before and after the holidays
\n(Christmas, New Year and Idul Fitri) television stations
\nbroadcast special reports on homeward and city bound travelers on
\na daily basis. Each television station must spend more than one
\nhour a day on such programming.<\/p>\n
What is the use of such reports? It is a waste of time on
\nthings people already know. Everyone knows that every year during
\nthose holidays the flow of travelers going to their home towns
\nand returning to the city is enormous, so it is always difficult
\nto find tickets for buses and trains. There is really nothing new
\nto report.<\/p>\n
I have observed that one of the television stations is very
\nfanatic in presenting this stale news. By its concentration on
\nthose homeward bound travelers it neglects the great number of
\nnews items which are more useful for viewers. This station may
\nthink that this is too much like hard work, and that it is much
\neasier to cover the movements of the travelers.<\/p>\n
From the aspect of broadcasting it is inefficient and
\nunprofessional. In this globalization era efficiency and
\nprofessionalism are absolute requirements for survival.<\/p>\n
