Home economics education not yet developed: Observer<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Home economics education in Indonesia remains
\nunderdeveloped, despite the fact that it was introduced here 44
\nyears ago, an observer said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Dewi Motik Pramono, chairwoman of the organizing committee of
\nthe eighth Asian Regional Association for Home Economics (ARAHE)
\nconference, said that Indonesians do not pay enough attention to
\nthis discipline. She said that, by contrast, advanced countries,
\nsuch as Japan and the United States, had already taught basic
\nhome economics to their people.<\/p>\n
"Home economics is a discipline to optimize the individual's
\nability to work economically within a family," said Dewi, a
\ngraduate of home economics department of the Jakarta Teachers'
\nTraining College.<\/p>\n
The conference, which was opened on Monday, will end today. It
\nis being participated in by 350 delegates from 16 Asian and
\nPacific countries.<\/p>\n
Dewi said that home economics was a discipline concerned, not
\nonly with cooking and sewing, but on that emphasized efficiency
\nin relation to time, place, manpower and individual abilities.<\/p>\n
Cooking and sewing were only aspects of the discipline, she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
According to Dewi, home economics is an integrated discipline
\nwhich students can practice immediately after they have studied
\nit.<\/p>\n
"At present Indonesia only has an undergraduate program for
\nhome economics education, said Dewi, who is also a successful
\nbusinesswoman.<\/p>\n
A delegate from the Philippines said that this was in contrast
\nwith her country, which already has a post-graduate program for
\nthe discipline.<\/p>\n
The definition of home economics is the study of families and
\nthe management of resources available to them for the
\nsatisfaction of basic needs in changing environments, said Lydia
\nB. Arribas, the Philippines' delegate, who distributed an article
\nto the congress participants.<\/p>\n
Lydia, who is a professor at the University of the
\nPhilippines, said the discipline was introduced in her country in
\nthe early 1920s.<\/p>\n
The University of the Philippines already had seven
\nundergraduate programs and nine post-graduate programs in home
\neconomics, she said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Minister of Religious Affairs Tarmizi Taher, who
\nwas the keynote speaker yesterday, said that religious education
\nhad a function to perform in meeting the spiritual needs of
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
He said that, for example, Moslem children here were taught
\nthe basic teachings of the Koran from kindergarten.<\/p>\n
In the religious education, Indonesian teachers used an
\nintegrated system, he said, in which the family as well as
\nteachers of other subjects also play a role.<\/p>\n
Today all delegates will visit PT Martina Berto, a herbal
\nmedicine and cosmetics factory, the Indonesia in Miniature Park
\nand the International Trade Center.<\/p>\n
The next ARAHE conference will be held in South Korea in 1997
\nwhile a meeting of the International Federation for Home
\nEconomics will take place in Thailand next year.(05)<\/p>",
