Hockey field to be ready by September<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The hockey field under construction at the
\nSenayan Sports Complex is expected to be completed by the end of
\nAugust.<\/p>\n
The Gelora Senayan Management Board director Saptodarsono told
\nreporters yesterday that the construction was waiting the
\ndelivery of synthetic turf by American company Astro Turf.<\/p>\n
\"If the carpet arrives by mid-August, we can finish the
\nconstruction by the end of this month,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Soekamto, the board's deputy for facilities development, said
\nthe civil works were conducted from June 19 to July 31.<\/p>\n
The asphalting work, which will have two layers, will take
\nplace from Aug. 1 to Aug. 10. The asphalt takes two weeks to dry.<\/p>\n
\"The process will be supervised by Astro Turf,\" Soekamto said.<\/p>\n
The installation of the synthetic turf will take one week and
\nis expected to start on Aug. 24.<\/p>\n
\"Then we only have to wait for the International Hockey
\nFederation to test the field,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Saptodarsono said the field may have a temporary bleacher for
\nspectators, if there was not enough time to construct a permanent
\none.<\/p>\n
The 19th SEA Games consortium, chaired by President Soeharto's
\nson Bambang Trihatmodjo, provided Rp 1.2 billion (US$461,540) to
\nbuild the field, excluding the bleacher and changing rooms.<\/p>\n
\"We'll discuss the budget with the consortium later,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Saptodarsono accompanied the Asian Hockey Federation president
\nSultan Azlan Shah, secretary-general Dato Seri P. Alagendra and
\nthe Indonesian Hockey Association chairman Raj Kumar Singh during
\na visit to the field yesterday.<\/p>\n
Alagendra, also deputy president of the Malaysian Hockey
\nFederation, told reporters yesterday that the field will be
\nfinished in time.<\/p>\n
\"We must be optimistic that the field will be completed in
\ntime. We shouldn't be doubtful,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The new field must have four changing rooms, instead of two as
\nplanned.<\/p>\n
Alagendra said that a synthetic turf field means Indonesia can
\ninvite strong countries such as Pakistan, India, Germany and
\nPoland, for friendly matches.<\/p>\n
Sultan Azlan Shah, also president of the Asian Hockey
\nFederation and the International Hockey Federation, said this
\nwould enable Indonesia to boost its hockey performance.<\/p>\n
\"If they have more experience, they can improve their
\nperformance at international events,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Malaysia has 12 fields and will soon have two more, while
\nIndia has 22. Other Asian countries -- South Korea, China and
\nHong Kong -- only have one each while Pakistan has two.<\/p>\n
