HMI's independence<\/p>\n
The independence of the Islamic Students Association (HMI) has
\nbeen debated inside as well as outside the organization because
\nmore and more of its members have taken important positions in
\nthe government, in social-political organizations and in
\nbusinesses. Since the rise of the New Order many members have
\nbecome part of the bureaucracy. This has raised the question as
\nto what degree HMI has been able to maintain its independence
\nwith regard to the government.<\/p>\n
From circles inside the organization an answer to those
\nquestions has come to light. In essence, although many members
\nhave joined the bureaucracy, HMI as an organization has not been
\ncoopted by the government.<\/p>\n
Allegations that HMI has become less sensitive to problems
\naffecting the community are rather difficult to deny. For that
\nreason, statements of self-criticism have been made inside the
\norganization. A third point that has been raised apparently
\nconcerns not only HMI, but all student organizations. It concerns
\nthe growing gap separating student organization activities and
\ncampus life.<\/p>\n
This last point is perhaps the most difficult for HMI to
\naddress. As long as non-campus organizations are denied access to
\ncampuses, organizations such as HMI will remain cut off from the
\nuniversities. Nevertheless, those issues need to be solved during
\nHMI's present congress. It is quite appropriate that HMI as the
\nbiggest student organization in this country should be able to
\npreserve its independence, that it should remain sensitive to our
\nvarious social problems and, obviously, that it should strive to
\nmaintain its close links with life on campus.<\/p>\n
