HKTI welcomes WTO agreement<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Indonesian Farmers Union (HKTI) welcomed on
\nTuesday the recent World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement on
\ncutting agricultural subsidies over the next eight years and the
\nacceptance of developing countries' demands to have a number of
\nagricultural products exempted from full-blown liberalization.<\/p>\n
HKTI Chairman Prabowo Subianto said the agreement came as a
\nrelief for Indonesian farmers as they would not face a flood of
\nimported agricultural products.<\/p>\n
\"We can't compete with agricultural products from developed
\ncountries because their farmers are heavily subsidized,\" Prabowo
\nsaid after signing an agreement with State Minister for the
\nEnvironment Rachmat Witoelar to promote environmental awareness
\namong farmers.<\/p>\n
\"With the WTO pact, we will now be able to protect our
\nagricultural products. We should thank the government, especially
\nMinister of Trade Mari Pangestu for her fight to make other WTO
\nmembers seal the deal.\"<\/p>\n
HKTI deputy chairman Fadli Zon, who attended the WTO meeting
\nin Hong Kong last week, claimed that most of the ideas agreed
\nupon at the forum were proposed by the Indonesian delegation. --
