HIV\/AIDS campaign held for inmates<\/p>\n
BOGOR: The recent finding that 20 inmates of Paledang
\nPenitentiary in Bogor are HIV-positive prompted AIDS activists to
\nhold an HIV\/AIDS campaign on Thursday for the 1,000-plus inmates.<\/p>\n
The campaign was held by three organizations, Stop AIDS Action
\n(ASA), the Indonesian Humanitarian Committee and the Spiritia
\nFoundation.<\/p>\n
Anton Dwi, who is serving a 17-year sentence, said he and
\nother inmates found the campaign to be useful, as they learned
\nmuch about HIV\/AIDS, including how the virus is spread.<\/p>\n
He said that the inmates had been restless and suspicious of
\neach other after they found out that some inmates had been
\ndiagnosed as HIV-positive. They had also been afraid that they
\ncould easily contract the virus from physical contact, especially
\nbecause many of them suffered from skin diseases and had to sleep
\ntogether in a stuffy cell.<\/p>\n
Hertin Setyowati from Spiritia Foundation said that the
\ncampaign was also aimed at supporting inmates with HIV. -- JP<\/p>\n

TANGERANG: A local district court began on Thursday the trial of
\ntwo Nigerian men charged with possessing six kilograms of heroin
\nin Tangerang, Banten province, for which they face a possible
\ndeath penalty.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors Puji Raharjo and R. Vidiato said the defendants,
\nMichael Titus Igweh, 23, and Hillary K. Chimezia, 24, were found
\nto be organizing drug trafficking.<\/p>\n
The case involved an Indonesian woman, Marlena, and a
\nZimbabwean, Kholisani Nkomo alias Ichku Eberu Okolwaja.<\/p>\n
Igweh and Chimezia were arrested in August last year following
\na tipoff from residents who had frequently seen drug transactions
\ntaking place at Marlena's house in the Vila Melati Mas housing
\ncomplex in Serpong, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
However, Marlena had died of a lung ailment while Okolwaja had
\ndied due to an AIDS-related illness at the Kramat Djati Police
\nHospital, East Jakarta, amid the investigation into the case.<\/p>\n
Both Igweh and Chimezia were charged with violating Article 82
\nof Law No. 22\/1997 on narcotics, which carries a maximum penalty
\nof death.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Permadi adjourned the trial until next
\nThursday to hear the defense plea from the defendants' lawyers.

TANGERANG: Employees of state-owned companies (BUMN) in
\nTangerang, Banten province, donated blood for the Acehnese people
\nduring a two-day event that began on Thursday.<\/p>\n
It was held at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport by the
\nFederation of BUMN Workers' Associations (FSP-BUMN) to coincide
\nwith the organization's 4th anniversary. The event was
\nfacilitated by PT Angkasa Pura II and the airport management.<\/p>\n
More than 500 BUMN employees donated blood on Thursday, and
\nmore are expected to follow suit on Friday.<\/p>\n
During an opening address, PT Angkasa Pura president director
\nEdi Haryoto said that the event was a manifestation of the
\nemployees concern for the Acehnese people currently suffering the
\nbrunt of a military operation in the province.<\/p>\n
He urged blood donors to continue to give assistance and to
