Highwayman shot dead in S. Jakarta<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police shot dead an alleged highwayman in
\nPetukangan Selatan, South Jakarta, yesterday after he robbed a
\nfemale motorist.<\/p>\n
A senior officer at the Kebayoran Lama police subprecinct said
\nthe suspect, Andi Afriadi, 23, was shot after he tried to stop
\ndetectives from arresting him.<\/p>\n
The officer, who refused to be named, said that Andi had
\nallegedly robbed housewife Ellywati Jaya on Jl. Palem VIII as she
\ndrove home yesterday morning. Ellywati had earlier taken her
\nchildren to school.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang confirmed that
\ndetectives tried to arrest Andi and that a shot had been fired
\nbut refused to give further details.<\/p>\n
The Kebayoran Lama police officer speculated that Andi had
\nbeen involved in at least three similar crimes in the area
\nrecently.<\/p>\n
The descriptions given by previous victims about their
\nattacker matched Andi's physical appearance, he said.<\/p>\n
The officer said the other victims had all been women and the
\nmethod and timing of the previous crimes were similar to
\nyesterday's case.<\/p>\n
Andi allegedly scattered handmade nails on the street to
\nflatten the tires of passing vehicles and waited for his victims
\nto stop before offering to help.<\/p>\n
Ellywati told police yesterday that the man approached her and
\noffered to help after she stopped to repair the flat tire.<\/p>\n
She gave the man Rp 5,000 (US$1.6), thanked him and got into
\nthe car. But he prevented Ellywati from closing the door.<\/p>\n
\"He indicated he had a dagger and said: 'I'm not here to help
\nyou. I'm a robber'.\" Ellywati said.<\/p>\n
The woman handed over her gold ring and Rp 52,000.<\/p>\n
But a police patrol car was passing through the area, which
\nwas quite deserted that morning, and the officers spotted the
\ncrime.<\/p>\n
The officers attempted to arrest the man but he threatened
\npolice with the knife before fleeing, the police said.<\/p>\n
After firing two warning shots, one patrol officer finally
\nshot the man, he said.<\/p>\n

Witnesses said that Andi was actually shot later in the
\nafternoon during a reconstruction of the robbery.<\/p>\n
Local residents said they captured Andi about 9 a.m. shortly
\nafter hearing the victim's screams for help. There were two women
\nin the car.<\/p>\n
They said Andi had tried to run away but he was caught a short
\ndistance from the site and taken to a nearby police station.<\/p>\n
They said police prohibited residents from watching the
\nreconstruction.<\/p>\n
But, during the reconstruction, the police stopped a car,
\ndriven by a woman, and asked the suspect to reenact the robbery,
\nresidents said.<\/p>\n
\"Maybe he (the suspect) refused to do so and tried to run so
\nthe police were forced to shoot him,\" they said.<\/p>\n
\"The police shot him in the neck, thigh and then fired into
\nthe air. The female driver must have panicked because she left
