Hight Court to probe soothsayer's tapes<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java (JP): The High Court will investigate
\nthe illicit circulation of audio cassettes containing a well-
\nknown psychic's predictions on this year's political turbulence.<\/p>\n
\"The court is prepared to help the Diponegoro Military Command
\ninvestigate the recordings, which have spread in Central Java and
\nYogyakarta,\" high court chief Harry Moerdjono said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Early this week Central Java military chief Lt. Gen. Soeyono
\nsaid the recordings of soothsayer Permadi were \"dangerous to
\nsocial order and security\" because they contained \"propaganda and
\nagitation\".<\/p>\n
Harry said his office, currently, had no copies of the
\ncassette and therefore could not, as yet, make any judgments on
\nits contents.<\/p>\n
He said his office would determine later whether the cassette
\ndid indeed contain information which endangered national unity
\nand, if necessary, withdraw it from circulation.<\/p>\n
Soeyono said the recordings were \"misleading\" because Permadi
\npredicted that Megawati Sukarnoputri, daughter of former
\nPresident Soekarno, would replace Soeharto.<\/p>\n
He said Permadi also provoked the people of Central Java and
\nYogyakarta not to trust him, Soeyono, as the region's military
\nChief.<\/p>\n
\"Permadi's comments are only the ideas of a soothsayer whose
\ntruth cannot be accounted for,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Permadi told The Jakarta Post that he never said Megawati
\nwould become president.<\/p>\n
\"I was simply pointing out that, God-willing, anyone could
\nbecome president. Look at Cory Aquino of the Philippines, or
\nBenazir Bhutto of Pakistan, for instance. Both of them don't have
\nwhat people call an appropriate background for the job,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Referring to Soeyono, Permadi said it was wrong for a military
\nchief to have suggested in one of his earlier speeches that
\nMegawati should stay at home and become a housewife.<\/p>\n
\"As a military man, he must respect the political ideals of
\nothers and must stand above everyone. Why doesn't he say a
\nsimilar thing about Mbak Tutut, for instance?\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"I'm correcting Soeyono because I care about him,\" Permadi
