Higher transport rates?<\/p>\n
Public transport rates in Jakarta have again become a subject
\nof public discussion. Public response arose after the
\ntransportation companies in Jakarta requested, through their
\nassociation Organda, that the government allow them to raise the
\ntariffs.<\/p>\n
The increase, according to Organda, is very much needed by the
\ncity's public transport companies. Operating and maintenance
\ncosts, it argues, have soared. The current rates can no longer be
\ndepended on to cover maintenance.<\/p>\n
Organda's board claimed the request was approved by the
\ngovernment's Director General of Land Transportation. However, as
\nDirector-General Soejono explained, the authority to decree a
\nrate increase rests with the Minister of Transportation, which
\nmeans that a final decision is still pending.<\/p>\n
Since the Minister of Transportation has not decided on the
\nproposed fare increase, there is still time to review the matter.
\nIf an increase is regarded as inevitable, the users of the public
\ntransportation means -- the majority of who have low incomes --
\nwill be forced to bear too much of a burden. Not to be forgotten
\nis the possible impact such a raise may have on the price of
\npeople's basic necessities.<\/p>\n
