High prices good for forest management<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Forestry Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo
\nsaid yesterday that high international prices of forestry
\nproducts would help Indonesia maintain sustainable forest
\nmanagement.<\/p>\n
\"High prices for our exports of forestry products would, I
\nbelieve, reduce the volume of forest harvests, which in turn will
\nhave a positive impact on the sustainability of our forests,\"
\nDjamaludin said at a luncheon hosted by the Indonesia-Finland
\nBusiness Council at the Hilton Executive Club yesterday.<\/p>\n
The luncheon was held on the occasion of the fifth meeting of
\nthe Indonesia-Finland Working Group on Forestry and Forest
\nIndustry and the launching of the Finland-Indonesia junior
\nexecutive scholarship program, which will be held annually for 20
\nIndonesian students at a time.<\/p>\n
Despite a slight increase in volume, Indonesia's plywood
\nexports fell by five percent to US$1.97 billion during the first
\nsix months of this year, as a result of falling prices on the
\ninternational market.<\/p>\n
Djamaludin said that to ensure sustainable forest management,
\nIndonesia has three priorities in developing its forests: namely,
\nthe improvement of natural forests, the development of industrial
\nforests and technological adjustment.<\/p>\n
The minister asked the visiting Finish forestry delegation to
\nhelp promote Indonesia's forest products in European markets, in
\nview of Finland's membership of the European Union since January
\nthis year.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia is hoping that Finland can promote the marketing of
\nIndonesia's forestry products, especially in the European Union,\"
\nDjamaludin said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's exports of wood products account for some 12
\npercent of its total export earnings. Last year, exports of wood
\nproducts, mainly plywood, decreased by 5.6 percent to $5.1
\nbillion, down from $5.5 billion in 1993.<\/p>\n
Reino Gunn, vice chairman of the Finish side of the Forestry
\nWorking Group said his country's membership of the European Union
\nwould not reduce its good relations with Indonesia, especially in
\nthe forestry sector. (rid)<\/p>",
