High-crime routes under snipers guard<\/p>\n

At least 15,000 policemen including snipers will be guarding the
\nnorthern coastal routes of West Java and Central Java to
\nanticipate a surge of criminal threats particularly on the days
\napproaching Idul Fitri, Christmas and New Year's holidays.<\/p>\n
West Java provincial police chief Insp. Gen. Dadang Garnida
\ntold The Jakarta Post in Cirebon on Thursday that the move, also
\nmeant to deal with any threat of terrorism, would cover the
\nroutes linking Cikampek, Subang, Indramayu and Cirebon.<\/p>\n
The snipers will operate in plain clothes and have the
\nauthority to seize criminal and terrorist suspects, with the
\nsupport of the Police's mobile brigade, anti-bomb squads and
\nanti-bandit units.<\/p>\n
In Semarang, Central Java Police Chief Insp. Gen. Didi
\nWidayadi also announced the same measures to cope with the rush
\nduring post-fasting holidays and safeguard the distribution of
\nbasic necessities against robbery.<\/p>\n
\"A team of snipers has been formed to protect food
\ndistribution and chase criminal suspects on vulnerable routes in
\nCentral Java,\" he told Antara in Semarang on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The routes to be under police watch will cover the northern
\ncoastal highways, mid-territory roads and southern lines.
\nHundreds of security and public service stations are being
\nerected on these routes, known to be prone to accidents, traffic
\njams and crime.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in the beginning of this rainy season 17 spots in
\nCentral Java's southern railway routes were found to be
\nsusceptible to natural disasters, especially landslides.<\/p>\n
Supriyadi, chief spokesman for Operation Zone V of state
\nrailway company PT KAI, said in Purwokerto that four of the spots
\nwere flood-prone and 13 others vulnerable to landslides and
\nerosion or subsidence.<\/p>\n
The lines prone to disasters are the railway tracks of Cipari-
\nSidareja, Gandrungmangu-Sidareja, Jeruklegi-Kawunganten, Lebeng-
\nJeruklegi, Gombong-Karanganyar and Wonosari-Kutawinangun.<\/p>\n
\"The four points prone to floods are the routes of Slawi
\n(Tegal)-Balapulang, Mergasari-Prupuk, Kebasen-Randegan and
\nKemrajen-Sumpiuh,\" added Supriyadi.<\/p>\n
Four other points that are vulnerable to be affected by
\nlandslides are along the routes between Prupuk-Linggapura, Notog-
\nKebasen, Langgen-Rawakele and Tambak-Ijo. The only area known to
\nbe prone to subsidence is located between Kreteg and Patuguran.<\/p>\n
The railway stations of Purwokerto, Kroya and Prupuk have
\nprepared freight cars packed with gravel and sand to overcome
\nsuch unfavorable developments in the wet season.<\/p>\n
The railway company's Operation Zone V has also increased its
\nrailway engine personnel's work frequency from twice to four
\ntimes weekly, in anticipation of the rising number of passengers
\nduring year-end holidays.<\/p>",
