High crime rate linked to TV violence: Singgih<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Attorney General Singgih has appealed to
\ntelevision stations to tone down the amount of violence in their
\nprograms because they could encourage criminal activities.<\/p>\n
Singgih told a seminar of criminologists in Semarang on
\nThursday violence on television has some links with crime and
\nviolence in society, the Antara news agency reported.<\/p>\n
\"I'd like to remind commercial television stations to exercise
\nwisdom in deciding to screen foreign films which portray
\nviolence, because they have a major impact on viewers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's four commercial networks, in their drive to
\nattract audiences and advertisers, have been accused of
\nportraying too much violence. In particular critics target the
\naction-filled American imports and kungfu films. However, the
\nprivate networks have continued to air the programs in spite of
\nthe criticisms.<\/p>\n
Falling short of any concrete evidence linking violence on TV
\nwith crime rates in society, Singgih in his presentation used the
\npopular Latin American soap operas, or telenovelas, to illustrate
\nhis point of the power the television media has over the public.<\/p>\n
These Latin imports have managed to \"hypnotize\" millions of
\ntelevision viewers in Indonesia to stop their daily chores and
\nwatch the films, he said.<\/p>\n
Such is the power of the television media on viewers that any
\nmessage relayed through the screen, including violence, would
\neasily influence the viewers, he added.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General said he fully agreed with the suggestion
\nby LP2K, a Semarang-based consumer agency, that television
\nnetworks should review their scheduling of telenovelas in view of
\nthe excesses they have on society.<\/p>\n
\"I've seen it with my own eyes the impact of these programs on
\nchildren and women. Usually they become lazy in their work as
