High court upholds Bintang's appeal against minister<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The State Administrative High Court has upheld
\npolitician Sri Bintang Pamungkas' appeal against former education
\nminister Wardiman Djojonegoro who fired him from the Civil
\nservice. This caused his dismissal from a teaching post at the
\nUniversity of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"The court orders the education minister (Juwono Sudarsono) to
\nrevoke the decree on the plaintiff's dismissal and issue a new
\ndecree to rehabilitate Bintang to his former occupation (as a
\nlecturer),\" presiding judge Benjamin Mangkoedilaga told reporters
\nat his office yesterday.<\/p>\n
Benjamin said yesterday that the court reached its verdict
\nTuesday to annul the Jakarta State Administrative Court's (PTUN)
\nFebruary ruling supporting Wardiman's decision to dismiss Bintang
\nas a lecturer at the University of Indonesia's faculty of
\nengineering in August last year.<\/p>\n
Bintang's dismissal from the post came after the former United
\nDevelopment Party legislator was convicted of defaming former
\npresident Soeharto and sentenced to 34 months in prison last
\nyear.<\/p>\n
Bintang however was released, along with labor leader Muchtar
\nPakpahan, by Soeharto's successor B.J. Habibie as part of a
\npledge to build a more democratic country only days after the
\nveteran ruler's resignation on May 21.<\/p>\n
Bintang told The Jakarta Post that he was very surprised by
\nthe decision.<\/p>\n
\"The victory is because of the amnesty... I was free of all
\ncharges once the amnesty was given,\" Bintang, who is also founder
\nand chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Union Party, said.<\/p>\n
He also said there has been an informal agreement with the
\nfaculty's staff prior to the high court' decision that he would
\nstart giving lectures on Aug. 31.<\/p>\n
\"I will give lectures for four hours per week,\" added
