Hero status sought for Adam Malik<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: The people and provincial government of
\nNorth Sumatra will sponsor a motion to designate former vice
\npresident Adam Malik to the rank of national hero.<\/p>\n
The provincial government's assistant secretary for social
\naffairs said a team had already been formed to campaign for the
\nproposal, which must be made to the Ministry of Social Affairs.<\/p>\n
Among conditions for receiving the status is that the proposed
\nindividual's home area must be a primary sponsor.<\/p>\n
Adam Malik was born in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, on
\nJuly 22, 1917. He is considered one of the country's most
\nesteemed diplomats and held the post of foreign minister from
\n1966 to 1978.<\/p>\n
He was selected as the country's third vice president in 1978.
\nHe died in 1984.<\/p>\n
North Sumatra Governor Raja Inal Siregar has announced his
\nfull support for the proposal. A seminar beginning Monday will
\nformally launch the campaign.<\/p>\n
Three North Sumatrans -- Raja Sisingamangaraja XII, T. Amir
\nHamzah and F. Lumban Tobing -- have received national hero
