The Chinese government recently passed the death sentence on
\nstate officials proven guilty of corruption.<\/p>\n
Here in Indonesia, efforts to eradicate corruption are just
\nbluff and empty promises. Corruptors are simply released and have
\nvirtually never been properly brought to court. Some recipients
\nof huge, unknown grants are still at large.<\/p>\n
During her visit to the United States, President Megawati
\nvowed that she would totally eradicate corruption, collusion and
\nnepotism, although she admitted that this was easier said than
\ndone.<\/p>\n
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has said Indonesia's
\nlaw enforcement process is not sound. At present, he said, there
\nis confusion over the implementation of Law No.3\/1971 and Law
\nNo.21\/1999, both relating to corruption issues, which means that
\ncorruptors can escape easily.<\/p>\n
Can corruptors play fines without anybody's secret assistance?
\nSome lawyers acting for a defendant tried at court for protesting
\nagainst fuel prices recently were not only physically hit but
\nwere also dubbed traitors of the state. Strangely, lawyers
\ndefending corruptors have never experienced this.<\/p>\n
In this context, the government must issue a law determining
\nwhen a corruptor will be allowed to hire expensive lawyers and
\nwhen a government-appointed lawyer will be enough for him, as is
\nthe case in minor offenses.<\/p>\n
Otherwise, a defendant's lawyer can exploit legal loopholes
\nand can easily defend his wealthy client by bending the law to
\nthe client's benefit.<\/p>\n
