Heritage society meets to draft charter<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: In cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and
\nTourism, the Indonesian Heritage Preservation Network (JPPI) and
\nthe International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) will
\nbegin a four-day workshop here on Wednesday to draft a heritage
\npreservation charter for the country.<\/p>\n
The workshop is expected to come up with a draft of a heritage
\npreservation charter for Indonesia, which would be endorsed at a
\nceremony in December.<\/p>\n
Chairwoman of the Indonesian Heritage Year 2003 Laretna T.
\nAdishakti said on Monday that the country required such a charter
\nthat could be used as a moral and ethical guideline for heritage
\npreservation efforts in the country.<\/p>\n
"Heritage preservation efforts are currently based only on Law
\nNo. 5\/1992 on Cultural Heritage, with related government
\nregulations and charters belonging to other countries including
\nAustralia's Burra Charter and Italy's Venice Charter," she said.<\/p>\n
She said Indonesia had an abundance of heritage sites, both
\nmodern and ancient.<\/p>\n
Each of the heritage sites was different and specific, making
\nit difficult for Indonesia to apply international standards in
\nthe management and revitalization of them, she said.<\/p>\n
Differences in the political and value systems between
\ncounties were another factor that made it impossible for
\nIndonesia to implement the foreign charters, Laretna added.<\/p>\n
Moreover, Law No. 5\/1992 was also widely perceived to have
\nfailed to accommodate all dimensions of the country's various and
\ndiverse natural and cultural heritages.<\/p>\n
