Heri Dono shows modern monsters<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Works of Heri Dono, one of the country's most
\nfamous avant garde painters and installation and performance
\nartists, are on display in Singapore.<\/p>\n
Mythical Monsters in Contemporary Society, Heri's first
\nexhibition in the country, showcases 15 of his most powerful
\nworks from the past 10 years. It is at Gajah Gallery until March
\n10.<\/p>\n
Heri's works, reflecting the current social and political
\nsituation in Indonesia, have drawn widespread attention of art
\ncritics and audiences. His paintings offer the Singapore audience
\na different perspective on the political violence and social
\ninjustice by depicting \"mythical monsters\" in contemporary
\nsituations.<\/p>\n
Two of his strongest political pieces are Two Party Border
\n(1998) and Dialog With A Gun (1998).<\/p>\n
Heri's inspiration is taken from the traditional designs of
\nwayang puppets, The features directly influence the forms of
\nmonsters and creatures in his paintings. His interest in the
\ntraditional Indonesian art of wayang puppets also led to
\ninstallation works. He has created installations, environmental
\nart and multimedia performances, which radically transform the
\nwayang shadow puppet tradition.<\/p>\n
Besides his paintings, there are three installation pieces
\ncalled Flying Angels, each with a mechanical device that allows
\nmovement of the wings.<\/p>\n
His exhibition has garnered much attention, with features in
\nnational newspapers like The Business Times and The Straits
\nTimes.<\/p>\n
Heri has been active in international art arenas like New
\nYork, Tokyo, Vancouver, Brisbane, and European cities including
\nBasel, Amsterdam, and Delft.<\/p>",
