Herculean task awaiting next badminton chairperson<\/p>\n

The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) badly needs a
\nfigure with capability and professionalism to lead the
\norganization and restore the country's former glory in the sport,
\na former world champion said.<\/p>\n
PBSI is slated to elect the replacement of incumbent chairman
\nSubagyo Hadisiswoyo, a former Army chief of staff, during a
\ncongress from Nov. 2 through Nov. 4.<\/p>\n
\"It will not be a problem who will be the next chairman. The
\nmost important thing is the candidates clearly understand the
\nproblems and future challenges for PBSI,\" 1985 world champion
\nIcuk Sugiarto told reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"We cannot rely on a certain figure just because he or she
\nholds a public position or has a lot of money.<\/p>\n
\"What PBSI really needs is a transparent way of running the
\norganization and that can only be achieved by applying modern
\nmanagement principles,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Icuk, who runs a badminton club, pointed out that Indonesia's
\nbadminton is on the decline, whereas other countries' is
\nimproving.<\/p>\n
\"Countries like China, Denmark and Malaysia have offered tough
\nopposition to Indonesian shuttlers, while countries like India
\nand Thailand have shown significant progress,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"PBSI new executives should realize that next year will be
\ndifficult for Indonesia to retain its domination in badminton due
\nto our depleting strength.\"<\/p>\n
Icuk said that under PBSI's new board of executives, Indonesia
\nought to be able to defend the Thomas Cup world men's team
\nchampionship title, the men's team gold medal at the 2002 Asian
\nGames and Olympic gold medals, especially in the men's doubles
\nevent.<\/p>\n
\"The problem is that most of our shuttlers already have
\nreached their peak, or golden age, while the second-string
\nshuttlers remain unprepared to fill their shoes,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"We have an even more challenging situation in the women's
\ndivision as it will be difficult for us to qualify for the Uber
\nCup final round next year with our current strength.\"<\/p>\n
Icuk also urged the new board to seek promotional
\nopportunities to cover its acute financial shortage instead of
\ncomplaining, without doing anything.<\/p>\n
\"There are so many things to be done to secure a healthy cash
\nflow as PBSI has a large amount of assets, including its own
\nshuttlers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Actually, PBSI would not have been plunged into such acute
\nfinancial problems if the current board had managed its assets
\nproperly. What we need is a person who understands how to promote
\nthe shuttlers for the benefit of both PBSI and the shuttlers
\nthemselves,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Icuk also suggested PBSI allow its shuttlers to arrange their
\nown individual contracts, instead of working only with Japan-
\nbased Yonex through a collective contract.<\/p>",
