Henley Index: How Many Countries Can Indonesian Passport Holders\nVisit Visa-Free?<\/p>\n
There are a number of reasons why having a \u201cstrong\u201d passport is an\nimportant asset. A \u201cstrong\u201d passport refers to how many countries the\npassport holder can enter without needing a visa in advance. According\nto global rankings such as the Henley Passport Index, top-tier passports\ngrant visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 190 destinations,\nwhereas weaker passports may cover fewer than 40.<\/p>\n
A strong passport is built on a country\u2019s diplomatic relationships,\neconomic stability, low risk of illegal immigration, and strict\nbiometric security standards. Foreign governments grant visa-free access\nto specific passport holders when they trust that visitors will abide by\nimmigration laws and return home.<\/p>\n
Examples of top-tier passports are Singapore, Japan, and a number of\ncountries within the European Union (EU). Indonesia, however, sits in\nthe lower-middle tier globally (while it rises to the mid-tier countries\nif we restrict the list to Southeast Asia). Out of 199 passports tracked\nby Henley, Indonesia ranks around 68th (granting visa-free or\nvisa-on-arrival entry to 70 destinations).<\/p>\n
Indonesia\u2019s passport strength is pulled in two directions. On one\nhand, its active diplomacy and ASEAN membership guarantee strong\nregional access. Hence, most of the visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry\nprivileges for Indonesian passport holders are located within Southeast\nAsia (ASEAN visa-free agreements). On the other hand, factors like\nhistorical economic disparities, immigration risk profiles evaluated by\nWestern countries, and a legacy of asymmetrical visa reciprocity keep\nglobal access in the mid-range.<\/p>\n
For Indonesians this is unfortunate as a strong passport is\nessentially a key to global mobility. Besides easier vacations, a\npowerful passport impacts personal freedom, financial opportunity, and\nsecurity in several major ways.<\/p>\n
For example, holders of a strong passport typically don\u2019t need to\nspend weeks filling out detailed embassy applications, submitting bank\nstatements, booking non-refundable flights, or attending interview\nappointments just to enter a country. They also typically don\u2019t require\nspecial transit visas just to step off a plane during a layover in\ncountries such as the United States, United Kingdom, or Schengen (Euro)\narea.<\/p>\n
This has also implications for business and investment. Executives,\nentrepreneurs, and consultants who own strong passports can fly to\ninternational meetings, industry conferences, or client sites on short\nnotice without waiting months for business visas. Investors with strong\ncitizenship face fewer diplomatic barriers when opening foreign bank\naccounts, buying overseas real estate, or launching international\nventures.<\/p>\n
Moreover, applying for visas is typically expensive and\ntime-consuming. A family traveling on a weaker passport can easily spend\nhundreds (perhaps even thousands) of dollars per trip on consular\napplication fees, courier and document translation services,\nproof-of-funds verification and travel insurance mandates. and lost\nwages from taking time off to attend embassy appointments.<\/p>\n
And in times of geopolitical crisis, natural disaster, health\nemergencies, or economic instability, a strong passport acts as an\nimmediate insurance policy. It allows holders to board a flight out of a\ndangerous area immediately without waiting for foreign governments to\nclear their entry.<\/p>\n
