        "content": "<p>Hectares of rice contaminated<\/p>\n<p>PURWAKARTA, West Java: Villagers of Cilegong have claimed that<br>\n43 hectares of paddy fields have been laid waste by industrial<br>\ncontamination, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>Some rice field owners told Antara early this week that they,<br>\naccompanied by village and district administration leaders, were<br>\ndemanding compensation from companies suspected of dumping<br>\nindustrial waste.<\/p>\n<p>They planted rice one month ago but the plants died, the<br>\nresidents said. They added that the companies had dumped<br>\nindustrial waste into Cikembang River, the rural people's only<br>\nsource of water for years.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported that the rice looked dry and had been<br>\ninundated with liquid which smelled bad.<\/p>\n<p>Local environmental affairs official, Didin Syahidin,<br>\nconfirmed that industrial waste had contaminated the rice. \"We<br>\nare investigating the companies to be held responsible for the<br>\ntragedy,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>A number of companies producing chemical waste are situated in<br>\nthe area, including textile companies PT Indorama, PT Mascot, PT<br>\nIndo Panca and PT Taroko.
