Heavy rain to come through January<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Heavy seasonal rains will continue to affect
\nmost areas of Indonesia except for Java where only light sporadic
\nrain will fall from overcast skies, an official said.<\/p>\n
Chief of Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) Sri Diharto
\nrevealed that the recent torrential rains affecting parts of
\nIndonesia were associated with tropical storms to the north and
\nsouth of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"But the storms have moved away. The south storm moved to New
\nZealand and vanished, while the North is moving toward India,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"That's why it's cloudy in Java with only occasional rain. But
\nin Central and Eastern parts of Indonesia, like Kalimantan,
\nSulawesi and also Sumatra, rainfall levels remain high and even
\nabove normal,\" Sri told the press briefing held at the State
\nMinister of Environment Office.<\/p>\n
Sri asserted that if the storms return and hit Australia,
\nwhich he said is possible, it would cause rainfall in Java.<\/p>\n
To keep up with the latest weather development, Sri said BMG
\nwould provide the information on its website within two days.<\/p>\n
\"Two days from now, we will provide satellite images which
\nwill be updated every hour on our website www.bmg.go.id. Also
\nprovided will be information about areas where rain is forecast,\"
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
Sri advised that BMG would also hand out the transportation
\nroute for the upcoming holidays.<\/p>\n
On the prospect of calamitous weather, Sri said that based on
\nthe prediction of eight international institutions, up until
\nNovember 2001, no abnormalities are expected.<\/p>\n
\"It means that we won't suffer from a long dry season. But
\nthere are some regions predicted to have rainfall levels below
\nnormal,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The regions are the north coast of West Java and Central Java;
\nPati and Rembang in Central Java; Lamongan, Gresik, Tuban, and
\nMadura in East Java; the east coast of Sumatra, southeast Aceh;
\nwest Aceh; the north side of South Kalimantan; the east part of
\nCentral Kalimantan; South Sulawesi coast; the north side of
\nSoutheast Maluku and South Maluku.<\/p>\n
Sonny also disclosed that some regions remained susceptible to
\nflooding until the end of the month.<\/p>\n
The regions include Aceh, East Kalimantan, the south coast of
\nSumatra, Southeast Sulawesi, and West Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
\"Besides weather, deforestation, river sedimentation, and
\nexploitation of natural resources also contribute to flooding,\"
