Heart failure caused death of Lt. Dadang: Doctor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A forensic expert has determined that a police
\nintelligence officer, reportedly stoned to death by students
\nduring a demonstration at Juanda University campus in Bogor last
\nmonth, died of a heart attack.<\/p>\n
Yuli Budiningsih of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Bogor
\nHospital confirmed yesterday that Second Lt. Dadang Rusmana's
\ndeath on May 9 was due to a coronary.<\/p>\n
\"We did not find any bruises on the back of his head. We found
\nonly minor bruises in his nose and on his lips,\" Yuli told The
\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Police have maintained Dadang died from a head injury
\nsustained after a rock was thrown at him by students. Yuli said
\nthe injuries she found might be consistent with the 43-year-old
\nfalling facefirst onto the ground.<\/p>\n
Dadang was comatose when he was admitted to the hospital at
\n4:03 p.m. on the day of the incident, she said. \"He died about
\nseven minutes later.\"<\/p>\n
Yuli said she examined Dadang's body at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n
National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Da'i Bachtiar disputed
\nthat Dadang's death was caused by a heart attack, insisting it
\nwas due to mistreatment.<\/p>\n
\"For the time being, police still consider that his death was
\ncaused by torture,\" Da'i told the Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
Dadang had tried to intervene to rescue a military
\nintelligence officer, Capt. Ali, from a student mobbing, when he
\nwas hit by a rock thrown by protesters, police have maintained.<\/p>\n
Ali remained hospitalized.<\/p>\n
Students have insisted they attacked Ali because he entered
\nthe university's mosque without removing his shoes outside.<\/p>\n
They claim Dadang's body was not at the scene when they were
\ndispersed by hundreds of police and military officers who entered
\nthe campus.<\/p>\n
Lawyer Esther of the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute said there
\nwas a significant time difference between when the officers
\ndispersed the students and when the police announced they found
\nDadang dying at the scene.<\/p>\n
She did not rule the possibility the police put Dadang's body
\nat the scene after the students fled.<\/p>\n
The university students and lecturers visited the National
\nCommission on Human Rights on Monday, complaining that police
\ntortured 12 students believed to be connected to the incident.<\/p>\n
Lawyer Apong Herlina of the institute, who represented the
\nstudents, said students were forced to confess they beat Dadang
\nto death.<\/p>\n
Nine of the students were released after being detained for
\nthree days, while the other three were named as suspects in the
\ndeath of Dadang, she said.<\/p>\n
Apong said one of the suspects, identified as Emon, was
\nparalyzed due to the torture inflicted during his time in custody
\nof the Bogor police precinct.<\/p>\n
She said Friday that her office and the commission had
\nreceived copies of Dadang's autopsy results, which were different
\nfrom the police reports.<\/p>\n
