Health centers maintain rates<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Community health centers (Puskesmas) in the city
\nhave announced that they will not raise their tariffs so that
\npeople, especially the poor, continue to get cheap medical
\ntreatment, a city councilor said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Councilor Nitra Arsyad of Commission E for welfare affairs
\ntold The Jakarta Post that all 322 health centers in the city had
\npledged to give the best service they could.<\/p>\n
\"In this troubled time a rise in medicine prices and health
\nfees in most private and public hospitals is inevitable. But the
\npeople must have the option of getting reasonable health
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
\"Puskesmas may seem inferior compared to hospitals. But
\nactually, if their performance and services were improved more
\npeople would visit them,\" he said.<\/p>\n
After visiting several of the health centers in the city's
\nfive mayoralties, Nitra said most catered for over-night
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
\"So people can be treated properly. They don't have to go to
\nthe hospital if their illness is not too serious.\"<\/p>\n
The average treatment fee at a community health center is Rp
\n3,000 per person, medicine included. (edt)<\/p>",
