Heading towards peace in Aceh<\/p>\n

Feb. 9, 2003, was the day the Indonesian government and Free
\nAceh Movement (GAM) anticipated to enter the demilitarization
\nstage. This is all in compliance with the cessation of
\nhostilities agreement signed on Dec. 9, 2002, in Geneva,
\nSwitzerland.<\/p>\n
The stage of demilitarization -- along with the repositioning
\nof Indonesian military forces, reformulating the tasks and
\nfunctions of the police mobile brigade unit, and GAM's
\ndisarmament, as well as establishing peace zones -- precedes the
\nconfidence-building period.<\/p>\n
GAM's demands are yet to be decided upon by the Joint Security
\nCommittee (JSC). JSC...and the Henry Dunant Centre, which has
\nbeen fair in mediating the peace deal, have performed well, so
\nthat the demilitarization can be expected to proceed smoothly.<\/p>\n
During this stage, the two sides are expected to be wise in
\ndiscussing the demilitarization process, so that a peaceful
\nenvironment can be established immediately. This must allow no
\nroom for violence, because the Acehnese long for peace in their
\nhomeland.<\/p>\n
Since the signing of the peace deal between the Indonesian
\ngovernment and GAM, the people in Aceh have felt safer and more
\ncomfortable despite minor violations of the agreement.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the two sides must honor the agreement so the
\npeople can enjoy a situation conducive to peace in the province.
\nAll sides must pay serious attention to the peace effort and
\ntrust the JSC, which will take firm action against any violators.<\/p>\n
All must hope and pray that the Acehnese people can lead
\nnormal lives in the unitary state of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Let's hope that every inch of Aceh can be developed into a
\nzone of peace without violence.<\/p>\n
