The demand for decent housing in Indonesia remains within the range\nof 20 million to 27 million units. This figure, which includes both\nthose without homes and those living in uninhabitable dwellings, is\ncurrently being finalised by the government.<\/p>\n
Hashim Djojemandikusumo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the\nPahlawan Harapan Sejahtera Indonesia Emas (PHSI) Foundation and Chairman\nof the Housing Task Force, stated that decent housing remains one of the\nnation\u2019s major housing challenges. Based on data currently under review,\napproximately 9 million families do not yet own decent homes, while the\nnumber of families who own homes that are deemed uninhabitable exceeds\n22 million.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are figures still being processed, likely from the economic\ncensus currently underway. We are looking at 20 to 27 million, though it\nis not yet final,\u201d Hashim said during the handover of 30 \u2018Rumah Cahaya\u2019\n(Light House) ownership certificates to forgotten heroes in Jakarta on\nMonday night.<\/p>\n
According to Hashim, providing decent housing is a vital component of\nimproving public welfare. He noted that independence has not fully\nbrought prosperity if a significant portion of the population still\nlacks adequate shelter. \u201cIndonesia has been independent for 81 years,\nbut some of our people are not yet happy because they do not have decent\nhomes,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n
Hashim added that this issue is one of the reasons the government is\nrefocusing its attention on the housing sector. Providing decent housing\nis part of the broader effort to enhance societal well-being.<\/p>\n
The Rumah Cahaya programme serves as a collaborative effort to\naddress this issue. Through the PHSI Foundation, 30 houses have been\nconstructed for Indonesian heroes and their families, with support from\nBank Tabungan Negara (BTN).<\/p>\n
Nixon L.P. Napitupulu, President Director of BTN, stated that support\nfor housing provision extends beyond mortgage financing. He noted that\ncertain segments of society are unable to access housing finance through\ntraditional credit schemes, such as those limited by age.<\/p>\n
In addition to the Rumah Cahaya programme, Nixon mentioned that BTN\nhas supported the construction and renovation of 477 social houses\nbetween 2022 and 2026.
