Harvard's award for Goenawan<\/p>\n
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (DPA): Harvard University announced
\nWednesday its 1997 prize for Conscience and Integrity in
\nJournalism will go to an Indonesian magazine editor who has been
\nbanned from publishing by the government.<\/p>\n
The award by the university's Nieman Foundation cites Goenawan
\nMohamad for his commitment to freedom of expression in Indonesia
\nduring the past 20 years.<\/p>\n
Goenawan's magazine, Tempo, was shut down in 1994 and its
\nentire staff banned from journalism after it published an
\ninvestigative report alleging government corruption in the
\npurchase of aging destroyers from the former East Germany.<\/p>\n
The foundation said although blacklisted Goenawan has
\ncontinued to campaign for press freedom, and inspired other
\njournalists to continue the fight for a "truly democratic
\nIndonesia".<\/p>\n
Harvard said Goenawan still publishes a version of Tempo on
\nthe Internet and has launched several independent press
\norganizations which continue to criticize the government's strict
\ncontrol of the news media.<\/p>\n
The award, to be presented to Goenawan May 6, is named after
\nthe late American journalist Louis Lyons, who headed the Nieman
\nFoundation for 25 years.<\/p>",
