Hartono repeats blind support for Soeharto<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: Defying mounting protests, former Army chief Gen. (ret)
\nR. Hartono, leader of the Concern for the Nation Functioning
\nParty (PKPB), has reiterated his calls asking PKPB supporters to
\nbe protectors of Soeharto.<\/p>\n
\"Not only loyalists, we are the protectors of Soeharto,\"
\nHartono addressed some 5,000 supporters while campaigning on
\nWednesday at the November 10 Stadium in Surabaya.<\/p>\n
He urged PKPB supporters to defend Soeharto's development
\npolicy, which once provided stability and prosperity for
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
He asserted that the Soeharto regime, which ruled the country
\nfor 32 years, was much better than the succeeding regimes that
\nhad ruled Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"Under the Soeharto regime, there were no bombings, all goods
\nwere cheap and the feeling of safety ran high,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He promised to bring back the good old days under Soeharto if
\nthe PKPB won the 2004 election.<\/p>\n
Hartono was criticized by various quarters after he declared
\nhimself a Soeharto loyalist during a campaign in Yogyakarta.
\nDuring the event, he also told Yogyakarta residents that they had
\nan obligation to follow suit, as they were of the same ilk as
\nSoeharto, a former ruler who was still being dogged by corruption
\ncharges.<\/p>\n
A Yogyakarta resident has filed lawsuit against Hartono on
\ncharges that he had insulted Yogyakartans. -- JP<\/p>",
