Harsh punishment sought for cruel killers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Ulemas Council Chairman K.H. Hasan
\nBasri has condemned the sadistic killing of a woman and her three
\nchildren in East Jakarta, and said he hoped that the killer would
\nreceive a harsh punishment.<\/p>\n
Hasan Basri said the killing of Eli Kusnaeni, 31, and her
\nthree children, Gilang, 8, Citra, 4, and Rizky, 2, was a heresy
\ncommitted by brutal people.<\/p>\n
Branding the killers as sadistic and as animals, Hasan Basri
\ntold reporters, \"the criminals deserve a harsh sentence for
\nthat.\"<\/p>\n
The four victims were found badly mutilated in their house in
\nCiracas, East Jakarta, on Monday.<\/p>\n
Those who are lacking spiritual education can easily commit
\nsuch criminals acts, he said.<\/p>\n
He said sadistic crime has become a social trend in the city.
\n\"Such a murder is only one case.\"<\/p>\n
\"God has given us the hearts to feel, the eyes to see and the
\nears to hear, but why don't we use them properly?\" Hasan asked.<\/p>\n
He said that TV stations must stop airing films filled with
\nexcessive violence. He said such films have directly or
\nindirectly influenced people to commit criminal acts.<\/p>\n
Mentality<\/p>\n
Zakiah Daradjat, a professor of psychology at the Jakarta
\nState Islamic Institute, said that the people who committed the
\nmurder were mentally unbalanced.<\/p>\n
She said that the people failed to cope with their life
\nburdens. As a result, their feelings of hatred had grown. The
\nenvironment and surroundings had intensified their hatred of
\nother people. \"Violent films may be the part of bad
\nsurroundings,\" she said.<\/p>\n
People, especially those who have less religious education,
\nwill imitate the actions of the actors and take the actors to be
\nheroes, she said.<\/p>\n
Zakiah said she shared the opinion that the criminals involved
\nmust receive severe punishment.<\/p>\n
Romulus Sihombing, a councilor with the City Council's
\nCommission A, in charge of security, said that the law enforcers

\nsuspects soon.<\/p>\n
\"The security officers should professionally take the case as
\na challenge,\" he said, adding that the authority must guarantee

\nenlivened to prevent criminal acts. He said Jakartans must not
\ntoo individualistic. People in a community should know each other
\nto enable them to identify strangers easily, he said.<\/p>\n
He said that the community security systems must be activated
\nbecause they have been proven effective in preventing
\nneighborhood crimes.<\/p>\n
He said that crime has been caused by, among other things, the
\nunbalanced situation in society.<\/p>\n
\"Efforts to maintain public order have frequently hurt
\npeople,\" he said, citing demolitions and the removal of street
\nvendors as examples.<\/p>\n
He said that harsh punishment may deter people from committing
