Harmoko urges thorough investigation into Udin case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Information Harmoko said the police
\nshould objectively solve the mystery surrounding the August
\nmurder of journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafrudin to prove that laws
\nare enforced.<\/p>\n
\"If laws are well enforced, journalists will be able to carry
\nout their jobs with a feeling of security and the journalistic
\nprofession will flourish,\" he told The Jakarta Post in Semarang
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Fuad Muhammad Syafrudin, better known as Udin, was attacked by
\na group of strangers at his residence near Yogyakarta on Aug. 12
\nand died in hospital on Jan. 16.<\/p>\n
Working for the Yogyakarta-based Bernas daily, Udin was
\nbelieved to have lost his life because of his scathing reports on
\ncorruption in the Bantul administration.<\/p>\n
Doubt in the police's sincerity in their efforts to solve the
\nmurder has been strong since they insisted, even before
\ncompleting their investigation, that Udin's murder had nothing to
\ndo with his profession.<\/p>\n
Harmoko called on the Yogyakarta police to heed the input from
\nthe Indonesian Journalists Association and the National
\nCommission on Human Rights, which have conducted separate
\ninvestigations.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that Udin's killers can be caught,\" he said.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Yogyakarta police chief Col. Moelyono S. said the
\nauthorities had completed questioning Dwi Sumaji, who police
\nbelieved is Udin's killer but critics doubt.<\/p>\n
The police theorize that Dwi alias Iwik might have murdered
\nUdin because the deceased had an affair with the suspect's wife.<\/p>\n
Moelyono said the dossiers will be submitted to the local
\nProsecutors' Office soon.<\/p>\n
In Yogyakarta, the lawyers representing Udin's wife criticized
\nthe police for insisting Dwi was the killer even though
\nindependent investigations found otherwise.<\/p>\n
The lawyers from the local chapter of the Legal Aid Institute
\nhave also queried the police keeping Udin's clothing and diary
\nthey borrowed to be used as material evidence. (23\/har\/pan)<\/p>",
