        "content": "<p>Harmoko tells PWI to report rival group members<\/p>\n<p>SEMARANG (JP): Minister of Information Harmoko is urging all<br>\ngovernment-accredited journalists to turn in to the authorities<br>\nany member of the unrecognized Alliance of Independent<br>\nJournalists (AJI) who distributes its unlicensed newsletter<br>\nIndependen.<\/p>\n<p>Harmoko reiterated that the Association of Indonesian<br>\nJournalists (PWI) is the only organization of local journalists<br>\nthat is sanctioned by the government.<\/p>\n<p>\"Establishing another organization is in violation of the law<br>\nbecause PWI is the only legal body (for journalists),\" he told<br>\nThe Jakarta Post last week.<\/p>\n<p>\"I call on PWI members to report any reporter claiming to be<br>\nan AJI member or activist that distributes Independen,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Harmoko stressed that the establishment of AJI by some 80<br>\ndissenting journalists was a futile exercise \"because the<br>\nauthorities will ban it anyway\".<\/p>\n<p>AJI was established last August out of dissatisfaction with<br>\nthe PWI and their failure to act when the information ministry<br>\nrevoked the licenses of three major news weeklies -- Tempo,<br>\nEditor and DeTik -- in June last year.<\/p>\n<p>Three AJI activists were recently arrested in Jakarta for<br>\ndistributing and selling the newsletter Independen, which is<br>\nhighly critical of the government.<\/p>\n<p>\"That magazine is illegal because it has no license from the<br>\ngovernment and so the decision to arrest (the activists) was<br>\njustifiable,\" he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>He warned journalists residing outside of Jakarta against<br>\ntrying to maintain the existence of the newsletter. \"They will<br>\nhave to contend with the authorities because that publication is<br>\nclearly prohibited,\" Harmoko said.<\/p>\n<p>The minister went on with his harsh criticism of journalists<br>\nwho misuse their profession to \"extort\" people, calling them<br>\n\"hoodlums.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"When we find such reporters,\" Harmoko advised, \"we should all<br>\nwork together to eliminate them because they are the ones<br>\ntarnishing the reputation of PWI.\"<\/p>\n<p>All PWI members, he reminded, should uphold press code ethics<br>\nand professional standards.
