The recent outbreaks of hantavirus and Ebola have triggered a\nfamiliar phenomenon in the United States: a surge in extreme conspiracy\ntheories. Narratives around \u2018plandemic\u2019\u2014a term for a planned\npandemic\u2014have resurfaced, with claims that the outbreaks were\ndeliberately engineered to disrupt midterm elections or force the use of\nnew vaccines.<\/p>\n
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Ebola is\nspreading rapidly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), posing a\nvery high national risk. However, in conspiracy circles, the deadly\nvirus is labelled a biological weapon, a financial plot, or a scheme to\nexploit national resources.<\/p>\n
The hantavirus outbreak, which began on a cruise ship in the South\nAtlantic\u2014killing three passengers and infecting at least 11 others\u2014has\nalso been targeted. Social media is rife with baseless claims, including\naccusations that passengers were crisis actors, involvement by Bill\nGates, and the use of horse dewormer ivermectin as a cure.<\/p>\n
Dr Joseph Uscinski, a political science professor at the University\nof Miami, stated that such phenomena are normal for conspiracy-minded\ngroups. \u2018When people pay attention to something, conspiracy theorists\ninterpret illness through their own lens. They blame those they already\ndespise,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
Conspiracy narratives are currently prominent among the US right\nwing. Some media platforms accuse hantavirus of being a transparent\nattempt to terrorise Americans and influence President Donald Trump\u2019s\npolitical standing ahead of elections. Mikki Willis, the maker of the\nfilm \u2018Plandemic\u2019, explicitly stated that the same pattern is being\nrepeated.<\/p>\n
However, Uscinski stressed that conspiracy theories are not always\npartisan. Their defining characteristic is deep distrust of power\ncentres, whether government or pharmaceutical companies.<\/p>\n
Ironically, attacks on state authority have worsened responses to the\nvirus. US efforts to contain Ebola have been hampered by massive cuts to\nglobal public health funding, including the dismantling of units at\nUSAID and reductions in CDC research.<\/p>\n
Diplomatic tensions have also emerged between US Secretary of State\nMarco Rubio and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus over the\nspeed of outbreak identification in Congo.<\/p>\n
Historian Thomas Asbridge noted that current responses to hantavirus\nand Ebola resemble the Black Death in the 14th century, which occurred\namid financial and climate crises. Public confusion exacerbated by\ncontradictory official messages creates openings for conspiracy\ntheorists to further destabilise the situation.<\/p>\n
\u2018We may be far slower in accepting and responding to what is truly\nneeded,\u2019 Asbridge warned. Amid medical uncertainty, misinformation\nremains the greatest challenge threatening public safety in the 21st\ncentury.
