Hanoi charges officials with graft<\/p>\n
VIETNAM: Vietnam has charged two vice ministers of agriculture
\nfor irresponsibility in a corruption case that caused losses of
\nUS$7.48 million to the government, state media reported on
\nFriday.<\/p>\n
The official Hanoi Moi (New Hanoi) daily said state
\nprosecutors have pressed charges against former vice ministers
\nNguyen Thien Luan and Nguyen Quang Ha for causing state property
\nlosses.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors accused Luan and Ha along with another six
\ngovernment employees in a corruption case centered on La Thi Kim
\nOanh, 48. The six were charged with embezzlement of state
\nproperty, abusing power and irresponsibility.<\/p>\n
In March state media cited police investigation reports as
\nsaying Oanh, director of an agriculture ministry-run company, and
\naccomplices used bank loans for bribery and personal expenses,
\nresulting in total losses of $7.48 million to the state.<\/p>\n
Police reports say Ha and Luan signed various documents which
\nhelped Oanh obtain bank loans.<\/p>\n
If found guilty, the two could be jailed for up to 12 years.
