'Handle your own garbage'<\/p>\n

Increasing the awareness of residents and encouraging
\nindividual initiatives to maintain a clean and healthy
\nenvironment could become an alternative option to handle waste,
\ninstead of relying on the City Sanitary Agency, who claim to lack
\nthe resources to handle garbage effectively, says an expert in
\nthe field.<\/p>\n
Households could begin by developing a habit of separating
\norganic and nonorganic waste, so that the sanitary agency would
\nonly have to collect the organic trash to be processed at the
\ncity's garbage dumping site, according to the head of Human
\nResources and Environmental Research (PSDML) at the University of
\nIndonesia, Setyo Sarwanto.<\/p>\n
\"To help, residents could be encouraged to be more disciplined
\nin handling their own waste, making a habit of separating their
\ngarbage before piling it up in front of their houses,\" he told
\nThe Jakarta Post last weekend.<\/p>\n
In this way, Setyo said, the sanitary agency would only have
\nto collect organic waste and process it at the city's trash
\ndumping site, which currently uses the sanitary landfill system.<\/p>\n
At the moment, garbage at Bantar Gebang, the city's dumping
\nsite in Bekasi, is separated by scavengers.<\/p>\n
According to Setyo, the government's campaign on garbage-
\nhandling is ineffective because it is based on a centralized
\ngovernment program and not on public initiatives to create a
\nclean environment.<\/p>\n
\"Ideally, the garbage campaign should be initiated by
\nresidents themselves based on their own motivation,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The City Sanitary Agency has allocated Rp 90 billion in
\nhandling garbage for this year, a sum Setyo considers sufficient
\nto manage the city's household garbage of 25,000 cubic meters a
\nday.<\/p>\n
\"However, there must be strict control of the budget in order
\nto have it implemented effectively,\" he commented.<\/p>\n
About 2,000 cubic meters of the garbage can not be transported
\nto Bantar Gebang, due to lack of garbage trucks, according to the
\nsanitary agency.<\/p>\n
The city administration accounted last month that the plan to
\nbuy eight large garbage trucks and 10 pickup trucks for the
\npublic order office was postponed because the funds allocated for
\nthe vehicles were used to pay for 55 sedans and five buses for
\ncity councillors.<\/p>",
